A few months ago I noted the building of a new Starbuck’s location on Henry Street in Kona. They opened the new location a few weeks ago. The new location is cozy inside, and has a small lanai. Parking is rather tight, but this location has a drive thru.
The baristas at this location are always friendly and accommodating.
I finally got my $1 refill cup. They now have them at the new location.
From a rather young age I have thought about my mortality on a daily basis. It’s one of those things that hangs in the back if the mind, and comes to the foreground every few hours. It makes me ask myself if I am doing what I want at that moment. Sadly, despite this motivation I seemed to have stifled some of my growth along the way. Part of me feels that I could be one of those people that could really contribute to the world, but the other side of me that believes that I shouldn’t be remembered seems to win more often than not. However, over the last few years I have been putting myself out there in an effort to reach some goals that require recognition to achieve.
Not sure where I was going with this, but I’m try to get figure it out.
You might be familiar with Dr. Barnard if you watch PBS. He has a popular program that is frequently played during pledge drive time entitled, Kickstart Your Health. The program essentially sums up everything that is in the 21 Day Weight Loss Kickstart book. Dr. Barard focuses on a plant based diet, and reduced fats and oils. He doesn’t suggest an elimination of oil, nuts, or avocados, but he does recommend a reduction in these items. Also, this plan allows for some convenient plant based food options such as Boca Burgers or other processed foods. The main message behind this diet is to get you to alter your food intake for just 21 days, and watch the progress. See how you feel, and see if you loss weight. Now, me personally I don’t need to lose weight, but I’m looking at this from a healthy life style prospective, and I’m fully behind anyone giving it a try for 21 days. If you don’t have time to read the book, you can find all the information that’s in the book, including meal plan, recipes, and shopping list on the PCRM website. They also have a handy iPhone app. with a daily menu and recipes.
This was the first audio book for the year. I have had a hard back copy of this book for over a year, but just couldn’t find the time to sit down and read it. In some ways, I’m glad that I didn’t. Steve Jobs was indeed a unique and revolutionary individual. I am left feeling that this book was repetitive, and not very objective. I felt that Mr. Isaacson fawned quite a bit over Mr. Jobs. Here are my thoughts about Mr. Jobs: He was lucky. He had a great sense of design. He didn’t take no for an answer. He didn’t mind taking other people’s ideas for his own. He was very focused on his own goals, and wanted to motivate people to make great products even if it meant being a jerk to them. I like his minimalistic and integrated ideas of design both in architecture and industrial design.
I keep trying to figure out if I learned anything from the book that I could apply to myself. I think I did, but I have to digest it a bit further to put it into words.
In the Kealakekua Ranch Center, just under Choice Mart, you’ll find Junjira Frest Thai Kitchen. The restaurant is mainly take-out with our door seating just next door, and feature fresh affordable Thai cuisine. I’ve eaten there several times, and really enjoy their veggie phad thai. For $8, it’s enough to feed 2 people, and they are happy to provide a side of peanut sauce & hot sauce to spice up the meal to taste.
I’ve found it to be a great place to visit after working up an appetite swimming at Ho’okena.
This book was a surprise, and showed up as a gift from John. I was a bit puzzled, as to why he purchased the book. Yes, I’ve watched the show, Portlandia, and enjoy it. However, I’m not one for novelty books. Before reading it, I hoped that it would be a tongue in cheek visitors guide to the actual town of Portland, OR. I love Portland, and sometimes miss my weekend trips there. However, this book was an extension of Portlandia the TV show. It’s a total novelty book that does mention some real businesses, like Jackpot Records and Voodoo Donuts, but really just rehashes the world of Portlandia the TV show.
There were a few humorous bits, and would be fun if you love Portland, but aren’t familiar with the show.
I’m back. It’s been a busy few months with photography work, and the holiday season.

I’ve been meaning to try Mahi’s since they opened in February, but just now found my way to stop in to give them a try. Mahi’s is located in the former Tex Drive Inn spot in Kopiko Plaza. The decor didn’t change much during the turn over, but they have added a giant mural of Waikiki and a television showing classic TV shows. The restaurant has a nice tropical feel, with several large tables and two tables outside. Service was fast, and polite. Prices are reasonable.
I ordered the First Mate ($9.99) to share with J. The First Mate features 2 Battered Fish, Two Shrimp, Pineapple Coleslaw, Cornbread, and Fries. This was plenty of food for sharing between the two of us.
Ono was used for the Battered Fish. The fish was delicious after I removed the batter. The batter was a little overwhelming for my taste. I added a bit of malt vinegar to the fish, and went to town. The meal also comes with a Lilikoi tarter sauce, which was really tasty. The fries were great, and I ate through the coleslaw in 30 seconds flat. The cornbread was more like a cake, super sweet, but good none the less.
I found Mahi’s to be a pleasant place to stop when I am craving fish n chips. I will probably give Mahi’s another try for their fish tacos or grilled fish.
